Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 61

It goes without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven’t read this chapter of Onyx Storm, please go read it first. Please note that some spoilers from future chapters will be found here.

Oh, for the first time, we get to read a chapter from… Rhiannon’s point of view. I think we need to pay very close attention, as these chapters might give us information about venin, wyvern, and other people we cannot see from Violet’s POV, seeing as she is engaged with Theo.

“I remind myself of what Raegan always says—Zihnal gives what he sees fit. No use thanking the god for one blessing and cursing him in the next breath.”

A good reminder for the gifts from Zihnal. They definitely all have serious meaning.

We’re now taking stock of who is around Rhi: Maren and Cat, Neve, Bragen, Sawyer and Sliseag, Aotrom and Ridoc.

Ridoc stares at the northern peak, not the path through the valley just south of it, like he could see straight through the thing if he tried hard enough.”
Could it be that Ridoc here has a second signet? Or is Aotrom allowing him to see through his own eyes?

It’s fantastic to see how Feirge replies to Rhiannon. Always a great thing to see how other riders interact with their dragons. Feirge sure is… wise. She sounds like a meditation teacher.

Something interesting happens here. Rhiannon seems to indeed second-guess herself. Not something that you ever see from Violet’s perspective. She seems strong and fierce and determined.

“Second-guessing your choices makes me do the same regarding Threshing,”

I feel like we are given access to Rhiannon’s vulnerability. But most importantly, we get access to a green’s commentary.

We get intel into Ridoc’s incredible use of skills too:
The wyvern shrieks, and a paler shade of gray spreads along its scales, emanating from Ridoc’s hand. The beast tenses, then ceases to beat its wings… and falls directly toward us.
Feirge surges forward, banking left to avoid the ridgeline, and I turn in the seat to watch the wyvern impact the rocky terrain. Holy shit, I think it cracked in half.

For a beat there, I thought Ridoc was venin, sucking the magic out of the wyvern. But no, he’s using his ice skills—freezing the liquid inside the wyvern. The beast becomes brittle and cracks! Badass Ridoc, badass!

The only other thing to note here is: seven of the wyvern got through, and with Cat, Maren, Bragen and Neve fighting their own, there are four wyvern left to pick off screaming civilians one by one. This is important for our timeline.

We know who is accounted for, noting that Xaden and Bodhi were both last seen by the walls.
