Iron Flame Theory – Violet’s second signet is dream-sight

Empyrean Series fans, please gather around because I finally figured out Violet’s second signet. And I am so certain of it, it’s unreal. This article was originally published in April 2024. Needless to say, this one ages well… 🙂

To get you excited, I would like to mention that Violet’s second signet has something to do with her ability to share Xaden’s dreams. And yes, I know we’ve talked about it but I think I figured it out what it means for her, why this is a crazy good power to have and how she will use it.

With this power, Violet will be able to be even more powerful than Melgren. And beautiful Liam? Oh Liam in that torture chamber? Oh that just makes sense right now.

Once I told you all of this, you will want to go back and re-read Iron Flame, guaranteed. Because EVERYTHING changed.

Where did the dream sight come from?

Before we start, I want to tell you the background story of how I figured it how, and it’s thanks to an anime.

The weather is very cold here in the UK and I’ve been feeling a little down lately, so I treated myself with tea, lots of snacks and a good series online. The series? My Happy Marriage, an anime based on the novel series written by Akumi Agitogi and illustrated by Tsukiho Tsukioka.

I know what you are thinking. Cory, what does an anime have to do with our Violet Sorrengail in the Empyrean Series? I’m so glad you asked.

In My Happy Marriage, the protagonist seems to have a lot in common with Violet. A childhood where only one of the parent was somewhat available until they died. A parent who is too busy with power rather than love for the child. A parent who sacrifices the child and sends her against her will to do something… etc etc

But then, the child turns out to be very special indeed. In My Marriage, the main character called Miyo has dream sight. And once I tell you what it does, you’ll realize how relevant this is to Violet.

What is dream sight as a signet?

Dream-Sight is a powerful power over a person’s sleep. Dream-Sight enables a person to manipulate the minds of others. For the purpose of using this as a signet, I will explain what Miyo can do in the anime. And you will imediately see how crazy useful this is going to be for our Violet.

Dream-Sight is a versatile ability that can be used for clairvoyance, locating missing items, and altering dreams.

Clairvoyance – is literally what Andarna can do. She waited to hatch for sooo long for Violet. And she knew Violet will become a rider. And this ability? WAY better than what Melgren has. From the most powerful, Melgren is pretty puny in comparison.

Locating missing items? Well hello written research and other works her dad did in the past. With her ability, she can located things. Remember her dreams of her dad in Fourth Wing? Oh yes, I bet it’s all coming to you. Her dad was telling her things through her dreams!!! She was already bonded to Andarna. Coincidence? I think not.

Altering dreams – Well well well…this is going to be a crazy cool feature indeed. She might confuse the enemy. Or might extract information. Alter the past and the future. Or even alter Melgren’s visions.

Users of this skill can view events from the past, present, and future during their sleep, making it a more powerful tool than many other similar abilities, such as Melgrens’ skill in foreseeing battle outcomes. OMG! A type of inntinnsic indeed. Excuse me, but didn’t our girl Violet say she needs to know everything? At all times? Information keeps her grounded. Well Violet, you shall have all the information at your finger tips!

Additionally, individuals with Dream-Sight can enter and change the dreams of any sleeping person, including themselves. Since everyone sleeps, this means they can influence anyone’s mind, regardless of their strength. It’s even possible to brainwash others using this skill by guiding them to perform specific actions or correct their mistakes while appearing as a deity in their dreams.

Can you take a moment to imagine how useful would this be for someone like Violet who needs to save Xaden? To keep HIM in check?

Is there any evidence that Violet’s second signer is dream sight?

Oh there is plenty. And I promise I will edit this article and bring you quotes to make it easier to see what I mean. But for now let’s focus on two of the most important things.

The dreams that she shares between her and Xaden? She either entered Xaden’s dreams or the venin’s dreams. Either way, she was uninvited there.

Do you remember how she is being dismissed when she asks Tairn if he saw her dreams? OH, I think that is so relevant. Because I think more than ever dreams are relevant. Because they are not just dreams. They are her signet being activated.

Do you remember Liam? She can talk to people from the past in her dreams. She was delusional. She can alter even her own dreams. That and I still think Liam was really sent back to her as a kindness from Malek because I still think Malek is her dad.

Do you remember in Fourth Wing how she dreamt of her father? I think she will have a lot more of these dreams. And given that both her parents are now dead with a lot of information missing, she will have to connect with the past via dreams somehow.

“They can see all of the past, present, and future in their sleep” which to me, means she will be able to get all her answers.

And I think Onyx Storm is going to be a lot cooler and full of action then. She will have to work on both her signets. But this dream sight? I think she will have to work on it without anyone else knowing she has it. Chances are, she is a type of inntinnsic. And very likely we will introduce more inntinnsics in Onyx Storm.

Like this theory but I don’t think she needs to be asleep so what would it be called? Also, maybe this is another Easter egg when Imogen asks her while watching Sloane in the mat sparring ‘you suddenly develop Melgren’s signer over there?’
Also wonder if anybody with a connection to venin gets intinnsic signets. Since they share a collective mind, this is something of the person that gets amplified. I think Xaden’s mom was venin. Wonder about the boy that got killed in 4th wing? Violet. Didn’t Violet also say she wouldn’t be surprised if Melgren took a mask off and underneath was vennin? Dain, I think his father is. Varrish his signet seems like a type of intrinsic too, being able to read weaknesses of people.

Hi, about the second signet well… I think she is a slayer because Tairn said when she killed Varrish‘s dragon slayer. but the dream sight theory ist bad either. But a signet represents who you are from the inside this is gonna get interesting 😉

– the first lines to Rhi in this are italic. Was she speaking to Rhi like she speaks to Xaden? Fully inntinnsic then?!!

Hi Cory, this is a great theory and makes sense-but the only flaw is that surely to influence dreams, she or the other person have to be asleep? It would be cool but if they were not asleep, it would basically be altering their current subconsciousness to change the outcome of their dreams, as it’s unlikely that the venue will suddenly fall asleep in front of her and that influencing a venins dream would help that much. However I do get that this is not the main point and that it is her own dreams that are the main alteration.
I think personally that her signet is something to do with wielding distance or time. Time is an easy one, as it was what andarnas gift was, but I feel like it wouldn’t make enough of a plot as she already has been able to stop time. Distance wielding however would make sense. In chapter 56, Violet asks Xaden if he is a distance wielder, and he says,” there hasn’t been one in centuries, and don’t you think if I was one, I would’ve spent every night in your bed”. It may seem like a passing comment, but when has Yarros ever made a ‘passing comment’ in one of her books? Never. Then, in chapter 64, Aaric says, “Damn, sorrengail, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you run so fast!”, and I think that here, violets signet power activated as she needed to reach the ward stone. This is also significant as she needs the power to outrun venin. My final theory on how this signet could be useful is a bit far-fetched and links to the second part of what Xaden says, but here goes.
Xaden is venin, and violet possibly can wield distances. Obviously, distance wielders can wield massive distances, as Xaden believes he would be able to go from Samara to Basgiath. What if Xaden joins venin as a spy, under the impression that Violet could see him every night so he could give her updates? This could make the storyline very interesting, as Xaden could betray Violet, or Violet could be found, or Xaden could end up loving venin. This is a bit far-fetched and took me way too long to write, so please reply with your thought!!

  It’s very possible. Many have expressed this as well in the original post Violet’s second signet. At this point, we are blind, aren’t we? We have so many clues but nothing that tells us for sure it’s this or that. With Xaden it was so much easier to realise that he is inntinnsic.
  I think it’s very possible that we need to separate them btw. We need to separate Xaden and Violet. But I think if she were a dream walker or whatever we might call her, it would be easier and safer for them to meet and communicate. But then again, Yarros doesn’t do safe does she?
  Many have suggested that Aaric will be the distance wielder. That could also make a lot of sense.
  BTW, I don’t think your theory is far fetched at all. It does make sense. If Violet is the distance wielder than your theory is bang on!

I just finished iron flame, and these were my exact thoughts about violet’s second signet, dream walker. Before reading, I had unfortunately already been spoiled about the ending. But that meant that while reading, the dreams she had with the venin stood out to me. Thinking it’s Xaden they want, maybe this is her dream. Then remembering her dream with her father in book 1. And even though signets only have to do with the rider, I also thought it was significant that Andarana was in a dreamless sleep most of this time. The abilities of a dream walker are still to be determined. Easily enough she can see peoples dreams, which might include their past, present, and future intentions. Can she manipulate those dreams? Or have conversations within them? I don’t know if we’ve seen evidence of that YET. There then comes the question of the Liam appearance and if that is a part of it. I wish it to be so we can have him back, but that experience seems so different than her other dream moments. I think I need to do a reread now to find other hints. Either way, it would mean she is also a type of inntinnsic. Meaning her and xaden really are the ultimate power couple in terms of dragons and signets
If this isn’t her signet, I would like it has something to do with seeing the dead or self healing. She was powering through her wounds so much more this book. But neither of those have to do with her need for knowledge

  And right???? RIGHT? She is def a dream walker of some sort. It just makes sense to me too. I think you are right also about Andarna.
  She was in a dreamless sleep. The fact that is.. “dreamless” should matter to us. I think that was a hint, what a great catch Louise!

This theory is quite plausible, but I still have questions: Sgaeyl chose Xaden’s grandfather, then she chose Xaden, and having the same lineage bond with the same dragon either causes madness or provides a 2nd signet. From this perspective, shouldn’t Tairn have bonded with a relative of Violet in order for Violet to have a second signet? I don’t think the dream-sight ability is related to Andarna (Andarna could stop time anyway) in this case, all arrows are directed towards Naolin. I think Naolin’s story is’nt simple and I think it’s one of the key points for the series. He doesn’t feel like someone who was just mentioned and put in the book to be forgotten.

  Violet would have a second signet because of Andarna. The stopping time was a gift she had once she was a child (feathertail). This means that she does need to have a second signet.
  Naolin was def not related to them. Or so I think…

This theory seems the most accurate to me especially when she has those two dreams with the Sage. It doesn’t seem like a nightmare but more of a conversation.

hai i just finish iron flame and i think violet second signet is can enter other people’s minds and see from that person’s point of view and can feel what that person is feeling at that time and if this signet is even stronger, maybe Violet can control that person to do what Violet wants them to do, a kind of suggestion in their mind.

    I think Mira will die in a later book. They are always saying that she would hate to be an only child. But there are usually only three sorerengails alive ate a time Brennan came back. Violets mother died. I think violets dad cold possibly come back to life or just faked his death like Brennan. They also may have found the cure or was close to finding the cure for vein, and someone found out and poisoned her mother while pregnant with violet and they couldn’t go any farther. Thats maybe why he was doing research on feather tails. maybe that has something to do with the cure. who knows?

  THANK YOU! I came here specifically hoping someone would bring this up! I just finished my first read of Iron Flame and this is what is getting to me too: her ability to see other people’s perspective, not JUST in dreams. It happened during battle, yes. But Violet could also “see” what Xaden wanted during the throne scene between them in Chapter 48. During that scene it didn’t seem like it aligned with just “feeling what he feels” intensely through their bond. It was seeing what he wanted to do to her along with how he felt. It stood out as different. She said “I felt how much you need me” but it was more than just his feelings being described.
  And now knowing that Andarna is essentially chameleon-like (for lack of a better word) to reflect what she “wants” to appear as (or needs to, in order to hide), how similar would it be if Violet’s second signet acts like a type of inntinnsic-siphon, where she’s not ‘taking’ powers or memories or reading minds at all times, but can be like a chameleon and “blend into” their perspective?
  Do we know if it was ever mentioned anywhere else that other riders could “see” into battle from their dragon’s view the way Violet could? (I consumed these books way too quickly to recall that at the moment lol.)

I think what you described would be too powerful to make a good story combined with her other gifts (kind of a Mary Sue problem). I think her signet is going to be something about learning about the past, which would be kind of a smaller version of what you are talking about. She loves history and learning from the past so being able to commune with the dead makes the most sense to me or getting visions of the past. That also makes an easy story telling method to move the story forward by learning about venin ect. I think its going to be some type of “reading” the past or people’s stories that need to be told, remembered, or found.

I stumbled on this article as I just finished Iron Flame and I’m convinced that Violet’s second signet is something to do with dreaming – I’m surprised at so many people saying she’s a distance wielder because I just don’t see it. All those venin dreams simply don’t make sense to me otherwise. And Andarna is a rare and powerful dragon, in fact her and Violet are similar in this regard. The second signet is going to be something even more rare and powerful than the first signet IMO. When she got lightning I was like, oh ok. Yeah it’s powerful but it’s not that unique and she still can’t really control it after two books. But dream walking? That’s pretty badass!

I really like this theory about dream vision and I think it could be an interesting second seal for Violet!
However I wonder about the sentence that says that feathertails are unstable in nature. We saw in IF that andarna changed color often, like a chameleon. Is it possible that violet’s second power is versatile? Is changing all the time depending on Violet’s need ?
Also Andarna is still young, maybe the signet is not stabilized until she become an adult.

Just finished Iron Flame (yes, late to the party) and I honestly believe the dream-sight or dream-walking has more to do with the bond than her second signet. I’d posit that it’s simply a matter of Xaden being unable to maintain his shields while sleeping and Violet getting the blowback of the Sage’s sending through their bond. Tairn has at least tangentially admitted that his bond with Sgaeyl will strengthen and change over time by admitting to the strength of the bond between Greim and Maise. I think the incident in the throne room and the dream walk are a reflection of that maturation between Violet and Xaden.
As for Violet’s second signet? Well. If they’re tied to what she needs. In the beginning she “needs” power to compensate for her perceived weakness. Given the state of things at the end of Iron Flame, what she needs (has always needed at her core) is information. About Basgiath, about the marked ones, Xaden, the wards. She’s going to need all the information about venin, their origins, how their power works, why drawing from the land inevitably corrupts them, in the next book, I’d think. She will be focused on fixing this for Xaden, regardless of what Barlowe says is possible. It could be treated as an inntinnsic variant, I suppose, or could manifest in something as simple as being able to make the logical leaps no one else can given enough data – sort of like the Mentats from Dune – or being able to read any language, or consume the contents of a volume by touch.

Do you think it’s possible that Violet has a third signet? Tairn has bonded with her family member (I don’t reminder who) and she has a second dragon. So she was pretty much already guaranteed two signets, but because of Andarnna, could she have a third???

      Tairn’s previous rider was Naolin.
      Sgaeyl’s previous rider was Xaden’s grandfather <3

So dream-walker was correct! One question though, this is what I was hesitant to say dream-walker, because it seemed like the Sage was the dream-walker to communicate with Xaden. In Onyx Storm we clearly see that Violet is a Dream-walker when she goes into Maren’s dream. But still in Xaden’s dream the Sage seems to be not just part of the dream also a dream-walker too—this is clearly seen in the one in chapter 56. The Sage addresses Violet and says, “It’s simple, dream-walker, you come or she dies.” The she is Mira and neither Violet or Xaden knew that then, the Sage was sending the message through the dream. What are your thoughts on this. Is the Sage also a dream-walker or is Violet able to bring multiple people into the same dream?
The dream-walking will be needed in Book 4, since Violet will be able to use her dream-walking to go into Xaden’s dreams—since we learned in OS that she was able to do it even when he wasn’t with her. 🙂

  Heather, hear me out—I know this sounds crazy, but what if the Sage isn’t a dream walker at all, but a precog? And what if Aaric is the key to stopping him? He seems to know far more than he should. 🙂
  At first, I thought Aaric might be the counterbalance to Melgren, but now I’m convinced he’s actually the answer to the Sage.
  Of course, the fact that the Sage can manipulate nightmares and communicate with Violet suggests otherwise—that he is a dream walker. But what if there’s more to it? I’m writing a theory on this now!

    Hi Cory,
    I definitely think one of the Venin leaders is a precog., possibly the leader above the Sage/Berwyn. Then as you say, Aaric is a counterpart to that venin precog.. Berwyn definitely feels like a dream-walker. Unless he has both dream-walker and precog. Being a dream-walker that makes what he says and reveals in the dreams even more relevant to what is happening, they are not just Xaden’s subconscious.
    There is definitely significant venin leadership we haven’t met. The venin the fought Vi on Tairn’s back, said you will meet them all when she was saying should would take Violet to them. Theophanie says she is trying to prove herself someone, not Berwyn, and he is waiting. And in one of the nightmares, there was reference to the “one who watched” at Resson who feels Berwyn should just kill Xaden because he feels Xaden isn’t going to yield and he should be killed before Xaden grows into his full power. So the venin also do not agree with what to do with Xaden and Violet. Obviously, the leader above Berwyn and Theophanie is the one waiting, wanting to keep Xaden and Violet alive to try and turn them both. The one who watched at Resson is someone else…aligned with the bad dad Aetos and Verrish camp—wanting to kill them.

      The only think I can’t shake off, right? Is how the irid told Andarna off ““That’s not how signets work,” Ridoc argues.
      “And you”—the male lowers his gaze to Andarna—“our very hope, have handed this human something far more dangerous to wield, haven’t you?””

      I agree with your theory. The venin do not all agree on what to do with Violet and Xaden. Not even Theo agreed. And she wanted Violet herself, even though Xaden “belonged” to Berwyn already.
      We can all agree that Xaden is going to become a deadly maven, though, right?

Hmm, I’d actually take it a step further. First, I don’t think Violet is just a dream walker… I think she’ll end up being something more like a death walker at her most powerful. After all isn’t sleep the ‘temporary small-scale version of death’?
Second, if she does descend to the underworld to barter for Xaden’s soul with Malek, the only way I see The God of Death agreeing to that trade is if the exchange is weighed heavily in his favour. Somehow I don’t see Malek, God of Death approving of the Venin’s desire to avoid / delay death the way they do.
Question that bugs me , why Dunne? Why did Violet’s father go to the God of War to save Violet’s life? Why not the God of Love?

  I think she was touched by two Gods: Dunne and Malek actually. For a long while I thought she was touched by loial but I don’t actually think so anymore. Not sure why. It’s just a hunch.
  I have the answer to your question!!! Asher took her to Dunne because he knew of Theo. Lilith was the answer to Theo right? And Lilith and Asher both knew that she was once a high priestess of Dunne. Asher as a scribe, did a looot of research and figured out how to give Violet a little bit of extra help in life. Allow her to be touched by the same Goddess, the enemy turned their back on. That will make Dunne favor Violet, right?

There is something I am wondering about the dream she makes in OS chapter 9, is it a past or future dream? Since changes everything about the sentence to Cat « He’ll choose you. I know he will. You’re the future queen of Tyrrendor, and your people need you. »
Is this giving us a hint about a historical event that we don’t know of and is important, or about a future moment when Cat will still be fighting for Xaden? (or someone else that would make her the queen of Tyrrendor). This might help us to understand why « queen » and not duchess… What do you think?

  I HATED that dream. Because it left me very…uneasy.
  1. Because Violet is the future of Tyrrendor.
  2. Tyrrendor doesn’t have a king, although I think that’s been altered in history by the current scribes and royals. I’m certain the original crown seat was Tyrrendor and now it’s falsely in Calldyr.
  3. I hope it was the past but knowing RY I reckon it’s probably going to be…something to do with the future.
