Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 36

It goes without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven’t read this chapter of Onyx Storm, please go read it first.

Oh, the epigraph. The parallels between the scribes and Hedotis again! Do you see? They want to be wise, but they are not. People who consider themselves in pursuit of knowledge, and yet, their very leadership reeks of Markham, who has the integrity of a rat, as per Violet’s words.

This chapter is fast-paced! We know that Rebecca Yarros is ruthless, and let’s face it, when we heard that Garrick is not breathing, we sort of stopped breathing too! We expected the absolute worst.

I do wonder, knowing that killing riders doesn’t kill their dragons, what was their actual plan? I’m also really uncertain about Talia’s reaction. Was she pretending again? The same way as she was pretending on the beach?

Violet,” Xaden pleads as our gazes collide. The panic in those onyx depths jars me like nothing else can. Xaden is very worried about Garrick. I think we should take stock of these feelings because when we are going to talk about the final chapter, we need to remember just how worried and upset Xaden was in these moments.

The next few sentences feel incredible. Violet being smart, a step ahead. She sensed something was wrong the moment they sent the children away. She had a backup plan all along.

In a world where the scribes and…Hedeon followers seem to prefer poisons, Asher conveniently taught Violet and Brennan about poisons? I think he knew, from the very start just how handy they will come later on. I wonder if he spent time teaching them how to protect themselves from the isles. Why else would he collect all the data in books which he specifically leaves for Violet alone?

Knowing that I do not believe Hedeon is the God of wisdom, can we take a moment to appreciate just how good this sentence here feels: “Time for your test. Do you know why arinmint is illegal to export? Why it’s against the rules to take it outside Aretia?”

Almost as if the true god of wisdom is testing the false god of wisdom. Fun. And just to reiterate it all, Tairn comes in and tells Violet to stop thinking like her but to think like him.

A wise man would save himself and his family, especially in a checkmate situation, wouldn’t you agree? And yet Farris wouldn’t budge.

“Blue. He hadn’t been using a blue-edged towel. He’d been scrubbing the blue off his hands.” At this point, if Rebecca Yarros decides to simply write action-packed detective novels, we stand behind her!

And yes, I hadn’t noticed that they were looking for something blue, for something colourful, until Ridoc makes this comment:

“We’re looking for something blue.” “You telling me there’s actually something colorful on this isle?” I think there is so much meaning to the lack of colours. I’m trying to put together a theory about the isles, lack of colors and the continent. But I’m coming empty handed for now.

“Errisbirds. Blue nails. The scent of overripe fruit.” And just as we’re about to celebrate, Ridoc gets stabbed. Gosh, this isle doesn’t stop giving.

  1. One remark to Xadens feelings fir Garrick. We have some situations in OS, when Xaden is very cold and angry to Garrick. But in this chapter we see how important Garrick is still for him.
